Scratchy, dusty and crackling with character, the tireless Crate Diggers deliver 175 instrumental phrases, solos and intros suited to hip hop, downtempo, soundtrack and house productions.

Pre tape, pre vinyl, and pre gramophone, cylinders were the original recording medium created by Thomas Edison.

This collection features a unique selection of authentic old-fashioned instrumentation.

175 samples are presented across 286MB of original material, broken into separate instrument folders of Accordian, Banjo, Clarinet, Guitar, Mandolin, Military Band, Piano, Saxaphone, Violin and Zither.

The demo showcases a small selection of clips in various genre settings.

About the collection

Over 5,500 cylinder recordings were reviewed during the making of this unique and original set of material. The Cylinders were transferred with a French-made Archeophone, using custom Shure styli from Expert Stylus in England.

The audio was captured into the digital domain using a CEDAR ADA at 44.1KHz with a bit depth of 24 bits in Steinberg's Wavelab software.

Files were edited, normalized and processed using CEDAR's Series X, Declicker, Decrackler, Dehisser, and Debuzzer units.

The quality of the original cylinders varies widely, depending on the type, the condition and even the quality of the original recording.

These samples are sold copyright-free to the end user. Crate Diggers, in co-operation with the UC Santa Barbara Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project, has licensed the use of their digitized collection of Edison cylinder recordings, in order to create this library for use by end users. Cylinder recordings made by the companies of Thomas A. Edison between 1890 and 1929, are presumed to be in the public domain. Edison recordings can be used in commercial and non commercial works without restriction.
